Philippines: a video featuring the struggles and victories of Filipino activists in reclaiming democratic spaces

The Council for People’s Development and Governance is a Filipino multi-stakeholder platform advocating development effectiveness, poverty alleviation, and genuine people’s participation.

Last December 2021, for the 10 days of action for HR and CS, they released a short year-ender video to feature the struggles, challenges, and victories of the Filipino civil society in reclaiming democratic spaces.

While the Duterte administration and its security forces are at the forefront of closing civic space and persecuting human rights defenders in the Philippines, civil society kept fighting and won some small victories. Through this short video, the GPDG aimed to feature both the struggles and victories of the Filipino civil society to reclaim democratic space in 2021 and over the last five years of Duterte’s militarist rule.

The video reached 704 views on the CPDG’s Facebook page, and was also disseminated through their CSO and institutional network, receiving positive feedback from the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator in the Philippines, as well as the Commission on Human Rights.
