Nigeria: an interfaith roundtable discussion around human rights and civic space

CAFSO-WRAG is a humanitarian, not for profit, and non-governmental faith-based organization based in Nigeria. Its main task is to challenge the structures and institutions that perpetuate poverty, hunger and preventable diseases, and campaign for the fulfilment of all socio-economic and human rights for sustainable human and ecological development. It is one of CPDE Faith-based organisations (FBOs) representatives.

Last December 16, 2021, in the context of the 10 days of action for human rights and civic space, they held a faith-based roundtable discussion around human rights and civic space in the country.

The event gathered 35 participants including religious adherents drawn from Christian faith, Islamic faith and African Traditional religion, as well as government representatives. The goal of the workshop was to engage the faith based organizations, adherents, and government members in the campaign against shrinking and closing civic spaces in Nigeria. The workshops were conducted in simple English and Yoruba (local language) and livestreamed throughout their social media channels. It was also an opportunity to distribute several IEC materials including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Istanbul Principles.

A press release was also issued and widely relayed in local media.

The activity was a success as it raised awareness on shrinking civic space among local actors and helped identify the role of FBOs in carrying out this advocacy.
