FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No to status quo! To achieve global goals, States must deliver on effectiveness commitments and focus on leaving no one behind – CPDE

15 September 2023, New York – Global civil society platform CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) is set to call on UN-member states attending the SDG Summit to renounce the status quo and deliver on effectiveness commitments, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Taking place on 18-19 September 2023, the Summit marks the halfway point for accomplishing the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda is a global plan of action to drive economic prosperity and social well-being while protecting the environment.

“Status quo is no longer an option. The world is reeling from the impacts of the pandemic, climate crisis, war, and conflict. The reality on the ground is so remote from the aspirations of the 2030 Agenda, and the vast majority is being left behind. To respond to the situation, we need a drastic change in strategy, and concrete and urgent actions,” explains Richard Ssewakiryanga, CPDE Co-chair.

“We urge governments meeting in the UN General Assembly to uphold the effectiveness principles of democratic ownership, inclusive partnerships, focus on results, and transparency and accountability, to allow us to correct our course amid the aftermath of multiple socioeconomic crises. Further, we urge that development cooperation be focused on serving the most impoverished and marginalised,” added fellow Co-chair Nurgul Dzhanaeva.

The platform’s demands are based on the findings of its Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) study, which bears the following recommendations: 1) Utilise the Effective Development Co-operation (EDC) principles to ensure that development finance, especially ODA, contributes to the SDGs; 2) meet the 0.7% GNI target for official development assistance (ODA), and protect ODA’s core mandate to poverty eradication; 3) commit to results that deliver the pledge to Leave No One Behind, and 4) build an enabling environment for CSO participation in SDG implementation.

To amplify its messages, CPDE will be part of the Global People’s Assembly, a gathering of civil society and people’s organisations, led by the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, to “demand an end to poverty and hunger, extreme inequalities, exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, climate change, inflation and the wars, as well as global justice, including universal social protection, tax and debt justice.” At the event, CPDE will also call for a reversal of the trend of shrinking civic space and criminalisation of dissent, which significantly hamper CSOs’ ability to operate as development actors in their own right. The People’s Assembly will be held on 17-18 September 2023.

CPDE is also bringing the UnMet Gala, a civil society parade for equality and justice featuring custom attires bearing the messages No to Status Quo, People over Profit, There is no Planet B, Aid for Just Peace, and Stop the Attacks, to New York, and joining the Climate March on 17 September.

Finally, in time for the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development on 19 September, CPDE will also be raising its demands for a global financial architecture that is anchored in development effectiveness principles, a human rights-based approach, and people-centered development.
